Educational Programs

All students at West Side participate in a strong core academic program.  California content standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics, History/Social Science, Science, Physical Education, and Visual and Performing Arts are the foundation of our education al program. In addition to the central core program, the District goes “Beyond the Basics,” providing student programs in technology, library skills, gardening, music, and art. All grades maintain a small class size, and the small district size adds to the personalization of our education program. Title I funding is used to support instructional assistants three hours per day in each classroom. A Resource Specialist serves our students with special needs. We have an English Language Development Coordinator for English Learners. grant funding and community donations support an Early Literacy Intervention Program, and a Technology Coordinator and program. West Side School also maintains its own library with over 4,000 books and other literary media for teachers and students. Students attend the library to check-out materials and for instruction in the areas of listening skills, library skills, correct use of the library, and proper care of books. Through book talks and reading aloud, our teachers seek to help students develop a love for books and a deeper appreciation for the library.

West Side has a positive discipline program with clear expectations for both learning and social behaviors. The social and emotional growth and development of each individual is supported, while fostering a safe campus and successful community of learners for all students.
